H.B. Muralidhara was graded Sho Dan in Shotakan Karate in the year 1986 by Sensei K.V. Subramanyan of Bangalore for having trained, attended many gashkus and helped in conducting many karate classes for 11 years.

With 11 years of martial arts training background, H.B. Muralidhara was initiated into Taichi and Qigong in 2004 by sensei K.V. Subramanyan.  Sensei Subramanyan’s own journey of Taichi started in 1982.

H.B. Muralidhara has been practicing CMC-37 tradition Taichi for 5 years now along side Badua Jin qigong as well as Zhineng Qigong.  He has also attended many Taichi – qigong retreats at Kundapura on the west coast of Karnataka, Southern India which has become a permanent fixture for senior students and other enthusiasts.  Retreats are held by sensei K.V. Subramanyan once in a year to rejuvenate and refresh his students.  In the retreat besides Qigong and Taichi, many mystic Indian internal arts of breathing are also introduced to his students.

H.B. Muralidhara took to Taichi-Qigong to address his left knee problem, dandruff as well as poor immune system and has never looked back ever since.  He was highly motivated by his personal benefits he derived from Qigong and Taichi.  Based in Bombay (Mumbai), India and motivated by amazing results of Qigong and Taichi, by way of holding private classes, he has been sharing his Qigong experience with many school teachers, engineering students, house wives and reiki practioners with positive results.  Some of his students have also attended Qigong Taichi retreats at Kundapura, west coast of India in Karnataka state to hone their skills under sensei Subramanyan.

H.B. Muralidhara has also undergone extensive training in ‘Kalari Marma Point Massage’ as well as ‘Thai Yoga Massage’ that are gaining momentum recently in India.  Click here to know more about Taichi and Qigong....

Why Qigong or Taichi?

The human system produces the most profound medicine naturally within.  Qigong and Tai Chi are time-tested tools for activating this incredible human capacity.  The range of application is immense from personal challenges such as illnesses, fatigue to cultural challenges such as violence, learning disabilities and addictions.

The wonder of this ancient multilevel mind-body enhancement is that it can contribute benefits for diverse situations and needs.  There are no boundaries to who can benefit – very old and very young, people who are extremely ill and those who are well and want to stay well.  No wonder, it is gaining momentum in the western world where people in general are stressed out due to lifestyle and attitude.

In the west, traditionally, people believe in the treatment of the disease, that is, we wait until we are sick and need to be cured before we think of medical treatment.  Prevention is not taken naturally barring immunization and mammography.  Some great physicians like William Mayo believed in “The ideal of medicine is to eliminate the physician” to Canadian William Osler who said “It is not just enough to determine what disease the person has, it is important to determine what sort of person has the disease.”  Also Known as Potentiation and disease prevention ‘enhance the righteous’ or ‘support the natural self healing capacity’it aims to maximize what is right rather than trying to fix what is wrong.

Qigong can be used to cure or heal but it does so by maximizing body’s naturally available resources.  There are two ways to kill the bacteria.  One, by injecting antibiotic you attack the disease that may temporarily halt the disease but end up  spreading dangerous side effects.  Two, by probiotic methods using Qigong, yoga etc you boost the immune system to kill bacteria without any side effects.  For heart problems, depending on its seriousness, normally we are asked to undergo bypass or use cholesterol reducing drugs.  Now we know, through ‘enhance the righteous’ we have access to Qigong or yoga or Taichi for mastery of stress free life and knowledge of nutrition.  Most Qigong traditions are focused on longevity and enhancement of human resources to maximize the positive effects.  “A rupee of prevention is better than a cure worth lakhs of rupees with life threatening side effects”

Three States of Qi

What is Qi? Simply means energy or prana that exits within us or even in the universe or other forms of universe like plants, animals etc.  Qi exists in three states of health and disease

Harmony
Deficiency
Stagnation

Qi in the state of harmonyis abundant and in balanced.  In that state, an individual is said to be in a state of relative health.

Deficiency of qi means an individual’s state of Qi is insufficient.  Qi gong here is used to access qi, gather qi, purify qi and circulate qi to make him or her regain health and vitality

In stagnation, qi is either stuck or become toxic or erratic.  Here qi is used to break stagnation or blockages to enhance circulation.

Consistency of Practice
People who are consistent with their practice even if their qigong is humble and simplistic get good result.  Sophisticated practice is less important than sincere practice.  Having a practice simply does not mean that you cultivate qi or get result.  You must remember that in cultivation, you need to clear weeds, loosen soil, select good seeds, water them and simply wait to get result.  In qi cultivation too you have to return to essential components to get a good harvest of inner harmony and vitality.

Basics of Qigong or Taichi

  • Right Posture
  • Movement
  • Mindfulness or Intentful mind
  • Relaxation

Right Posture
Correct posture and relaxation facilitates and maximizes free flow of qi to all organs.  Blood and lymph which are a fluid media in which qi circulates are enhanced through proper posture.

Right Posture (Primary)
Visualise a connection between the crown of your head and the celestial realm-heaven- which applies a gentle force upward straitening and expanding your spine.  Visualise a connection between your sacrum and the middle of the earth applying a gentle force downward straitening and expanding your spine to create more space for your organs.  Qi moves freely in spaciousness.

Right Posture (Secondary)
Relax your shoulders.  Feet parallel, pointing forward, knees softly bent, hands dangling from shoulders, spine erect, pelvic bone resting on the hip making the back remain straight.  Just like a fruit bowl.  Fruits are organs and pelvic bone is the bowl.  If you bend the bowl forward, fruits spill over and fall.  Keeping it straight will help free flow of qi.  Finally, slightly move your elbows away from your body as if you are holding a small ball under your arm.

Movement
Movement in qigong pumps and diffuses body fluids like blood and lymph all over the body lead by qi.  Qi always commands blood and lymph.  Movement and breath in qigong are tools for gaining control of the acrobatic mind.  Jumpy mind needs something to latch on to.  To make it less jumpy which is what body movements enable mind latches on to breath and body movement.

Breath
Breath is the most powerful tool for gathering, discovering, directing and circulating qi all over the body.  Posture and movement are noticeable while breath cannot be noticed easily. While breathing in, imagine your stomach/chest expanding with fresh air filled with positive qi and while breathing out imagine chest/stomach contracting expelling spent or negative qi out of the body into the universe.  Breathing has to be deep, slow, smooth and purposeful.  If done correctly, one notices subtle qi flow immediately.  Breath is the master key in qi cultivation.

Mind/Consciousness
Mind is a powerful tool to command qi.  Mind has its positive side as well as negative.  Positive mind is that mind which remains focused, calm and Intentful.  Negative mind is constantly trapped in worries (either past or future), guilt, anger or any other negative emotion.  In qi gong positive mind is applied to body and movement to cut out its acrobatics and also chiefly to command qi.  Qigong without mind is like any other calisthenics.

Relaxation
A relaxed body and mind allow abundant flow of qi into the blood and lymph.  If the muscles are tense or locked, the qi either does not flow or flows very less or stagnates. The qi should flow freely reaching all the organs, tissues, Taichi channels, spine, bone marrow and some acupressure points.  Even stagnant or toxic qi lodged in your mind and body for some reason gets released when qigong is done in a relaxed manner.  Qi gathering, circulation, purification, storing, conservation and transmission becomes easier when mind-body is relaxed.  Relaxation comes from correct posture, breath and movement.

The Supreme Ultimate

New research on heart disease, cancer, diabetes and even addiction has confirmed that increase in personal health activities prevents and heals disease.  The best of modern medicine plus our own ability to maximize self-healing capacity undoubtedly goes a long way in increasing longevity and vitality.  All science including medicine is in an exuberant phase with the advent of quantum physics.  With this exciting picture of quantum physics ahead, opportunities to access tools at no cost to build our inner resources is immense.  What more do you need at this hour when Qigong -Taichi, Yoga etc have amply proved their worth to take you where everyone wants to be and again at no extra cost.

Even more compelling, your practice may take you into the awareness of boundless unity-One- which the quantum physics throws up frequently.  If the experience of unity overtakes you, it changes everything, rewires you.  Qi is free, it is everywhere, and everyone has direct access to it through simple methods that are easy to learn and practice.  Every body who practices Qigong cultivation consistently experiences some form of health improvement, change in energy level.Qi cultivation is easy if you let it be.

Qigong Classes by Muralidhara H.B.
Qigong classes are held as per request either at student’s place of convenience or in a public park, if it is a large group.  In all, we expect learners to log in 12-15 hours to learn the basic Qigong.

Module I
Qigong classes are conducted either one to one or in a group after a preliminary health check up to make sure that learner’s profile is not kept a secret.  It would be an added advantage to the teacher if the profile is made known to him for any contra-indications like H.B.P, LBP, Vertigo etc for appropriate modifications in Qigong to suit the learner.  Classes are normally held between 6 am and 9 am every day for a period of 6 days.  If any payment towards using a public place is  involved, the expense would be equally shared among learners.
Module II
For those of you who are short of time but determined to learn Qigong to promote and sustain one’s health as well as self healing, a second module would be suitable.  Here, classes are conducted for three days preferably from Friday to Sunday from 6 am to 6 pm with breakfast, lunch and tea break.  Fruits would be served for breakfast and vegetarian lunch followed by tea.  A minimum of 5 to 10 people are required for this module.
